A septic tank pump-out starts before the truck arrives. The technician locates the tank's access lids, which on older systems may be buried a few inches below the lawn. Once the lids are off, they check the liquid level and inspect the baffles, the inlet and outlet fittings that keep solids inside the tank where they belong. What the baffles look like before the pump-out tells an experienced technician a lot about how the system has been running.
The vacuum truck removes the liquid and accumulated solids from both compartments of the tank. Tanks vary in design, but most residential systems in Central Mississippi have a first compartment where heavier solids settle, and a second where the liquid clarifies before moving to the drain field. Pumping both sides matters. A partial pump-out that clears only the liquid leaves solids packed against the outlet baffle, which is where the next problem usually starts.
After the solids are out, many technicians rinse the tank walls with a high-pressure hose to break up any remaining crust and allow a clear look at the concrete. That is when cracks, root intrusion, and deteriorating baffles become visible. Catching a cracked inlet baffle during a routine pumping is a minor repair. Finding the same damage after it has failed and passed solids into the drain field is a much more expensive situation.
How often your tank needs pumping depends on tank size, household size, and how the system is used. The every-three-to-five-year guidance is a reasonable baseline, but Central Mississippi's clay soils and wet seasons can shorten that interval. A technician who services your area regularly can give you a more specific recommendation after looking at how the tank has filled.
