What Is a Lift Station and Why Does It Need Cleaning?
If your property sits below the sewer main, a lift station is what keeps wastewater moving uphill.

A lift station is a pumping system that moves wastewater from a low point to a higher one. Gravity handles most of a sewer system, but when a building or collection point sits below the main sewer line, the wastewater has nowhere to drain on its own. The lift station collects it in a wet well and pumps it uphill to rejoin the gravity system.
Where lift stations show up
Commercial properties are the most common setting. Strip malls, restaurants, apartment complexes, schools, churches, and industrial facilities all use them when the site grading puts the building's plumbing below the nearest sewer connection. Some residential subdivisions have community lift stations too, especially in areas where the terrain drops between the neighborhood and the treatment plant.
Central Mississippi has a lot of rolling terrain. The river bluffs near Vicksburg, the hills around Jackson, and the low-lying areas south toward Hazlehurst all produce sites where gravity alone cannot move the flow. That makes lift stations common here, and it makes their maintenance a routine part of managing commercial property.
What fills the wet well
Everything that goes down a drain in the building passes through the lift station. That includes sanitary waste, soap, food particles from commercial kitchens, and anything else flushed or poured. Over time, grease rises to the surface, solids settle to the bottom, and debris accumulates around the floats and pumps.
Grease is the worst offender. In a restaurant or commercial kitchen, the volume of fats and oils entering the system is high enough that the lift station's wet well can develop a hardened grease cap in weeks. That cap restricts the float switches that tell the pumps when to run. When a float sticks in the wrong position, the pumps either run dry (burning out the motor) or never start (letting the well overflow).
What cleaning involves
Cleaning a lift station means pumping the wet well completely. The vacuum truck removes all the liquid, the floating grease layer, and the settled solids. The technician inspects the floats, the pump intakes, and the check valves while the well is empty and accessible. Anything wrapped around an impeller or wedged in a valve seat gets cleared.
After the solids are out, the walls and components are rinsed with pressurized water to remove the grease film that would otherwise start the buildup cycle again immediately. A station that is pumped but not rinsed will re-coat faster than one that was cleaned properly.
What happens when cleaning is overdue
- A grease cap forms and immobilizes the float switches, so the pumps lose their start-stop signal.
- Solids accumulate around the pump intakes, restricting flow and increasing motor strain.
- The wet well level rises past the alarm line. If the alarm is not wired or not monitored, the next stage is overflow.
- Overflow sends untreated wastewater into the surrounding soil, stormwater drains, or onto the property surface. In a commercial setting that is a health violation, a potential fine, and a disruption to the business.
- Pump motors that run against a blocked intake or a stuck float burn out. Replacing a lift station pump costs significantly more than a cleaning visit.
How often to clean
There is no single answer. A lift station serving a high-volume restaurant needs cleaning more often than one serving a small office park. The starting interval is typically every few months for heavy-grease commercial users and annually for lighter loads. Your local municipality may also set a minimum cleaning frequency as a condition of the discharge permit.
The best way to set the right interval is to clean the station, then have the technician check the level and grease cap thickness at a set point afterward. That measurement tells you how fast the station fills under your actual usage, rather than guessing from a table.
